DESCRIPTION:<p>Join Voter Choice Massachusetts for a community reading and facilitated discussion grounded in Frederick Douglass's powerful reflections on freedom\, equality\, and civic responsibility—paired with Worcester's own history of democracy\, reform\, and backlash.</p><p>Worcester has a unique civic story: in the mid-20th century\, the city used a proportional ranked-choice voting system for local elections. This event uses Douglass's words as an anchor to explore what genuine representation means\, how communities expand democratic participation\, and how backlash can shape what reforms endure.</p><p>What to expect (6:30–7:45 PM):</p><p>Welcome and community agreements (trauma-informed)</p><p>Shared reading of Frederick Douglass (multiple volunteer readers\; read aloud or follow along)</p><p>Facilitated humanities discussion (whole group + optional small-group circles)</p><p>Brief local history segment: Worcester's democracy reform era and why inclusive reforms sometimes face backlash</p><p>Closing reflection and community resources</p><p>This event is designed to be welcoming for people of different backgrounds and comfort levels.
